New Evidence on Dengue and Zika Population Immunity from Sri Lanka

This study assessed dengue and Zika virus seroprevalence among 4,161 children aged 4–16 years in a highly endemic region of Sri Lanka. The findings showed that šŸ³šŸ®.šŸÆ% š—¼š—³ š—°š—µš—¶š—¹š—±š—æš—²š—» were already š˜€š—²š—æš—¼š—½š—¼š˜€š—¶š˜š—¶š˜ƒš—² š—³š—¼š—æ š—±š—²š—»š—“š˜‚š—², with exposure increasing steadily with age.

The study further explored exposure to different dengue virus serotypes and Zika virus, providing important insights into population immunity and transmission dynamics in endemic settings.

Interestingly, a substantial proportion of children showed evidence of monotypic dengue infection, while others demonstrated exposure to multiple serotypes, highlighting the complex transmission dynamics within the region.

Using multiplex serology, the study also identified Zika virus exposure in 16.5% of participants, with an inverse relationship observed with age, raising important questions about the potential influence of prior dengue immunity on susceptibility to Zika virus infection.

These findings contribute valuable evidence to support dengue vaccine implementation strategies, vector control planning, and preparedness for future Aedes-borne viral outbreaks.
