At the recent Sri Lanka Medical Association medical congress hosted in collaboration with the International Diabetes Federation South-East Asia, brought together leading clinicians, researchers and healthcare professionals to discuss the latest advances in medicine and public health.
Prof. Asita de Silva conducted a plenary on the remarkable journey of the polypill, from its early concept and evidence generation to regulatory milestones, including FDA approval, and its role in transforming global hypertension management.
Following the plenary, Prof. de Silva joined an expert panel discussion titled “Strengthening the Clinical Trial Ecosystem in Sri Lanka – The Way Forward.” The session brought together distinguished experts, including Prof. Udaya Ranawaka, Prof. Neelika Malavige, Prof. Bernard Cheung and Dr. Manju Rani, to discuss the future of clinical research in Sri Lanka.
The discussion explored the regulatory framework, opportunities and challenges in advancing clinical research in the country. Panelists also discussed the challenges that remain, including streamlining regulatory processes, enhancing infrastructure, capacity building and increasing public awareness and trust in clinical research.
The congress reinforced the importance of collaboration in advancing medical innovation and strengthening Sri Lanka’s clinical research landscape. Through thought-provoking discussions and the exchange of practical insights, the event highlighted the country’s growing role in generating high-quality clinical evidence and translating research into improved patient care. Prof. Asita de Silva’s participation in both the plenary session and expert panel reflected his continued commitment to advancing hypertension research and supporting the development of a stronger, more sustainable clinical trial ecosystem in Sri Lanka.
